Construction of the P7.9-billion international airport in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental will be fast-tracked for partial opening in 2010. The goal is to open before the end of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s term that year instead of the original 2011 completion target.

Governor Oscar Moreno said Korean construction firm Hanjin is ready to start development of the project site. “The Department of Transportation and Communication issued [to Hanjin] last Jan. 8 the notice… to start the project on or before Feb. 5,” he told BusinessWorld late last week.

The provincial government, in coordination with the Transportation department and other national agencies, has been working on a resettlement program for families affected by the project since last year. To serve Northern Mindanao, the Laguindingan international airport covers 387 hectares and would cost an estimated P7.853 billion when completed.
